Intended Use

The Salmonella Isolation Swab uses a modified XLT41 (Xylose-lysine-tergitol 4) medium to differentiate between Salmonella spp. and non-Salmonella spp. XLT-4 Medium was developed for the selective identification of Salmonella enteritidis from environmental specimens containing large numbers of competing organisms.

This swab-based test is ideal for sampling food contact surfaces and processing environments, offering accurate and reliable results.

Why choose Klipspringer Environmental Swabbing Tests?

  • Highly sensitive, so will detect even low levels of the target organism
  • Organisms remain viable for further testing
  • Easy to use, with highly visible results
  • Fast results, helping to speed up the process of taking corrective action

Instructions for Use

  1. Peel back wrapper to expose both caps.
  2. Remove swab and sample test site.
  3. Remove cap of culture tube with thumb and forefinger and discard.
  4. Insert swab in culture tube and push down fully to immerse the swab completely.
  5. Fill in site details, etc.
  6. Incubate at 37°C for 24-48 hours. If no colour change is observed after 24 hours, reincubate for a further 24 hours to allow lower levels of detected organisms to grow.
  7. Read results.
  8. Dispose of tube.

Precautions

  • If any orange or black/yellow media tubes are found when the box is opened, DO NOT USE.

Precautions When Swabbing

  • When sampling an area always use the same swabbing technique.
  • Always try to sample the same surface are (100 cm² or 200 cm²), and be consistent in your sampling.
  • The moisture level on the surface should not vary at different sample times. It may be preferable with dry surfaces to wet the swab in a suitable wetting agent such as Ringers, Tween Lecithin Thiosulphate Ringers or Tween Peptone water.

The positive result organisms for this test are E. Coli, Enterococci, and Proteus sp.
A positive result is indicated by a colour change from purple to yellow. Any colour change is significant. A negative result is indicated by no colour change.
In the unlikely event that you find black media tubes inside your testing kit, you should NOT use them. Instead, you should dispose of the tubes immediately.
Here at Klipspringer, we supply our own range of Laboratory Incubators. There are currently four models in this range. All four models are Natural Convection Incubators with advanced heating systems that ensure excellent temperature uniformity, low power consumption, and minimal heating times. Through the gentle circulation of air, they will heat your test samples to a temperature that accelerates the growth of micro-organisms – all without damaging or drying out the culture media. If you already have an incubator on site, you can use our dedicated Test Tube Rack to hold your Environmental Test Swabs in place throughout the incubation process. Click here to order a Test Tube Rack.
