BRC Issue 8 makes detectable pens mandatory

The draft version of British Retail Consortium's 'Global Standard for Food Safety' Issue 8 was released for consultation in November 2017.

As always with an updated standard, a number of new clauses have been added in response to changes in the production environment.  Of particular interest is clause 4.9.6.2:

Pens used in open product areas shall be controlled to minimise risk of physical contamination (e.g. designed without small parts and detectable by foreign body detection equipment)."
In simple terms, this means detectable pens are now mandatory in food and beverage production environments.

It also means you need to be very careful about which brand of metal and x-ray detectable pen you choose as some brands available in the UK do not comply with this requirement.

We fully endorse and applaud the inclusion of this clause and are pleased to confirm that the Retreeva Global detectable pen range supplied by Klipspringer fully conforms with this stipulation.

  • Contains no small components such as metal springs.
  • Has no hidden components likely to cause a foreign body concern.
  • All compoents are either stainless steel or made from metal and x-ray detectable polymers thus complying with the phrase "detectable by foreign body detection equipment".
  • Is made from a shatter resistent, food contact approved polymer.
  • Each box of Retreeva Global detectable pens contains a signed certificate of conformity, complete with batch number for traceability.

Prevention before detection

Klipspringer consider that the primary aim is to prevent foreign body material from invading raw ingredient or finished product. Detection of contaminants by metal or x-ray detection equipment is therefore considered the second line of prevention. Retreeva Global pens deliver this by:
  • Assembling each pen from the minimum number of component parts.
  • Moulding with special polymer/material that reduces the risk of breakage or shatter. In the event that unusual force or pressure is inadvertently or deliberately applied to break or crush a pen, then small fragments (or shards) are not created or scattered uncontrolled.
